New V20 firmware for N95 8GB; Not worth the trouble

Posted by ptpr on April 11, 2008

The Nokia N95 8GB has received a firmware update. This one isn’t as drastic and groundbreaking as the one we got last year…Infact, I don’t even feel that its worth your time to update.

According to Teo from Symbian Freak, the main things to note in this update are ASR (Auto Screen Rotation) and Combo Memory.

Auto rotation is pretty self explanatory. Your screen will change orientation depending on the way in which your phone is positioned. We’ve been able to do this on the N95 for a long time now, thanks to Samir’s RotateMe. To activate atomatic screen rotation go to Tools>Settings>General>Display and then set Rotate Screen to automatic.

If you were to ask me how I feel about this feature I would tell you that I’m dissapointed. It’s too unresponsive and slow. You can’t even adjust the sensitivity or select which applications or menus can be rotated – something that an application from a single freeware developer can do.

I don’t know what Combo Memory is but according to Teo it won’t benefit the consumer in any way.

So, what are the BAD things about this update?

1) Auto Rotation is crap and I feel Nokia were lazy with their implementation of it.
2) Still no user data preservation.

OK, what’s GOOD about this update?

1) The platform hack still works!

I don’t recommend the update, they only added one crap feature that can already be done using 3rd party software! Don’t waste your time having to reinstall all of your apps again.

How to install ANY applications using platform hack!

Posted by ptpr on April 2, 2008

I posted 2 methods in my guide here on how to install unsigned applications. Apparently, this wasn’t good enough for some people so today I bring you another method to get the applications that you want on your phone without the need of Stupid Symbian Signed!

First of all, you will need to have the Symbian Platform hack RUNNING this means you must be able to write to the C drive on your phone. Check out the guide here if you haven’t done it already.

1) Download and install MobileSigner (A great app by leftup, a member of OPDA and Symbian Freak forums) from HERE.

2) Download THIS file. Open up Y Browser and create a folder in resource called swicertstore and then make another folder in there called dat so it should be c:\RESOURCE\SWICERTSTORE\DAT once you’ve done that, paste the file file that you just downloaded in the dat folder that you created.

3) Go back to Resource and from there, make swicertstore into a read-only folder (Options>file>attributes) once you’ve done that, make dat into a ready-only folder aswell and then, finally, make the 0000001 file into read-only.

NOTE: you may get an error like ‘invalid name’ while trying to make the files read only this is because the C:\ part of the path isn’t visible in the scrolling text at the top in Y Browser. These screenshots should make everything clear:
When you can see the C:\ part at the top like it’s highlighted in the screenshot above press save.
When you can’t see C:\ above, wait for it to scroll along until it’s like the first screenshot before you press save otherwise you’ll get an error. Thanks Homme ;)

4) Go to the private folder on C: and then scroll down to the folder named EC696702 and paste THESE 2 FILES into that folder, say yes when Y Browser asks you to replace them.

5) Copy your unsigned file to your memory card, in any place you want as long as you’ll remember it.

5) Open up MobileSigner and select the application that you’ll be signing. Now go to Options>SelfSign.

You’ll get a message confirming your success. Now navigate to where you saved your application and there’ll be a new copy of the app with a .SISx extension. Install it and enjoy!

Now all you’ll ever have to do to install unsigned apps again is just repeat step 5! Easy, isn’t it!?

Thanks again to the folks at Symbian Freak, special shout outs to FCA00000, Leftup and Porselinaheart!

As usual, if you have any problems/questions leave them here by using the comments form.

Nokia strikes again: FCA00000 hired

Posted by ptpr on April 1, 2008

FCA00000 was a great man. He played a huge role in the Symbian community being able to now do anything they wish with their phones, something that Nokia aren’t too happy about. So, what better way to stop the hack progressing and to prevent it ever happening again than to hire the man behind it.

This morning I tried to contact FCA00000 via MSN to see if there were any new developments with the hack. This is when he told me that he couldn’t help me with that due to him now being under NDA. Naturally, I was shocked. He then continued to inform me of the details of his position at Nokia.

His role is as the Principal Software test Engineer, and he’ll be moving to the UK for his new job. He also tells me that the agreed wages are amazing.

UPDATE: FCA00000 has sent me a video in which he says his final goodbyes and bids good luck to you all:

It was good to know you, FCA00000.

R.I.P FCA00000, another man lost to the ongoing war in Finland.

Guide/Tutorial: How to install unsigned applications!

Posted by ptpr on March 30, 2008

A few days ago, I posted a simple guide on how to ‘hack’ Symbian 9.2. Since then, I’ve received a large amount of people complaining that they still can’t install unsigned applications, so, for everyone still having trouble…THIS IS THE GUIDE FOR YOU!.

EDIT: This method is still valid but if you want a MUCH QUICKER AND EASIER way to install unsigned files, scroll down until you see some orange text.

First of all, you’ll need to download and install UnSis version 2.5 from HERE and Y Browser from HERE.

In this guide, I’ll be using NokMote as my example unsigned application.

OK, now that you have UnSis installed, fire it up, press the button that says Open SIS and open your SIS/SISX file. UnSis will then automatically ‘unsis’ your application and display the directories that the different files will be placed in. Click on extract and keep UnSis opened.

Go to my Computer and open the uNsIs folder from the drive where you installed UnSis which should be C:\. From here, open the temp folder and here you’ll find a few more folders. Create a folder on your phone called Manual Install and place the folders extracted from your sis file into ‘Manual Install’.

Open up Y Browser on your phone (make sure the Symbian 9.2 hack is running first!) and navigate to Manual Install.

Now we’re gonna start copying the files over to C: and this is where the details on UnSis come in. Look at UnSis and you’ll see that the first line says !:\sys\bin\Nokmote_0x2000B842.exe, this means that I’ll need to go to sys>bin (in the Manual Install folder in your phone) and then copy Nokmote_0x2000B842.exe into C:\sys\bin. Do the same for all files listed.

This probably sounds daunting to you, right? Well, it is a bit tedious. I suggest that before copying files, if you see that there’s several files in the same location, just mark them all, copy and then paste them into the appropriate locations.

Once you’ve made sure that you have copied ALL files, restart your phone and you should see a lovely new icon in your applications folder!

Any problems, please leave a comment.

Enjoy!

EDIT: There’s now an automated method of installing unsigned applications thanks to si33 of Symbian Freak!

What you’ll need:
Python for S60 (you need the correct PythonForS60 and PythonScriptShell apps)
This .zip file

1) copy all the .py files from the Resource folder in the zip file into C:\RESOURCE on your phone.
2) copy the unsigned sis you want to install into the root of the mass memory on your phone and if needed, rename it to something simple, for example, change “finestfonesownz123456unsigned.sis” to “finestfonesownz.sis”
3) you’ll now need to edit the UnsignedInstaller python script that’s in the zip file by using notepad. Once you’ve opened it, hit CTRL+F and search for myunsigned which should bring you to that line. Edit “myunsignedfile” to the name of your application, so in my case it would be called finestfonesownz.sisx. Once you’ve edited the file, save the file and copy it to the Python folder on your phone.

4)On your phone, open the UnsignedInstaller using Python and wait for it to finish and your app will now be in your applications folder!

I recommend that you download X Plore so that you can edit the python script whilst you’re away from a computer.

Thanks si33!

UPDATE: If you’re having problems, try my NEW GUIDE for signing any applications by using this hack.

Symbian 9.2 has been hacked! Guide/Tutorial HERE

Posted by ptpr on March 26, 2008

I brought you news of a way to get certificates despite Stupid Symbian Signed locking you out. Now I bring you a way to not even need to sign applications to use them on your phone!

Thanks to FCA00000 and others in this thread for coming up with this solution! Thanks also go to Neanton for the basic guide!

WHAT DOES THIS HACK ALLOW ME TO DO?

It will allow you to install UNSIGNED applications. It will allow you to give applications FULL permissions. Basically, it will give you FREEDOM.

HERE IS MY GUIDE ON HOW TO INSTALL UNSIGNED APPLICATIONS.

Download ActivePython HERE, install it.

Download and install PySerial from HERE.

Download and install AppTRK (to your phone) HERE.

Download Hack Perms HERE.

CLICK THE IMAGES FOR A LARGER SIZE!

Let’s get to business:

Connect your phone to your PC via USB in PC Suite mode.

Go to Control Panel>System>Hardware>Device Manager>Ports OR in Windows Vista it’s Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Device Manager>Ports.

Once you’re there, look for your phone, in my case it’s called ‘Nokia GSM Phone USB (COM3)’. Make a note of the number after COM, you’ll need it later.

Open AppTRK on your phone and press cancel when it trys to connect via bluetooth. Go to options>settings>connection and change it to USB. Go back and press options then connect. This is what you should see:

Now open up the Hack Perm python file in notepad on your PC, press CTRL+F on your PC and search for “ser =” (Without quotation marks, of course). Once you’re there change the 5 that’s in the brackets to the 1 less than the number that followed COM in the step above.

For example, if your number was 7, you would change the number in the brackets to 6 and if your number was 5, you would change the number in the brackets to 4. Once you’ve done that, save the python file (JUST SAVE, NOT SAVE AS).

Once you have done this, just double click the Hack Perms file and wait for about 5 seconds, during this time, you should see this, notice the “!!!!!!!!!!!candidate!!!!!!!!!!!”, this shows you’ve been successful:

Now to make the hack computer-free:

Download THIS file and copy the contents to a folder in your phone.

1) Using your file manager of choice copy the CProfDriver_SISX.ldd file into C:\sys\bin.
2) Install CapsOn and then install CapsOff.

That’s it! Whenever you want to run the hack just select CapsOff and the hack will be working! No need for a computer! If for some reason you want to turn off the hack just select CapsOn… Yes, it really is THAT EASY.

DONE!

Things to note:

1)I will not be held responsible for anything happening to your phone. Nothing bad should happen anyway.

3)This hack has been confirmed on the N95, N95 8GB, N82 and some others. If you perform this hack, please tell me your phone model.

Don’t forget to check out how to install unsigned apps here.

Here’s to a bright future for the now truly open S60!

Control your Nokia device with simple hand gestures!

Posted by ptpr on March 23, 2008

Gadget88 from Howard Forums has found a cool video demonstrating upcoming applications that allows the user to control their phone in a new way…

Eyeplay by eyesight allows the user to control their device simply by making hand gestres infront of the device’s camera. Sounds good, doesn’t it? Check out the (hebrew) video here to see just how well it works even with old S60v2 devices.

just imagine the ways in which this could be implemented into your phone! Swipe your finger down over your front-facing camera to scroll down a web page with ease! Connect your Nseries device to a TV and play games by moving around like with the eyetoy!

The NinjaStrike game that’s demonstrated in the video has been released already according to eyesight’s site, but I’ve been unable to get the game from anywhere.

Unfortunately, to take advantage of this new input method, new applications must be installed which means you can’t use eyeplay with the default applications on your device.

I’m hoping that Nokia will pick up on this!

Get your own developer certificate NOW.

Posted by ptpr on March 22, 2008

As most of you already know, SSS (Stupid Symbian Signed) have revoked the end user’s ability to attain a developer certificate, forcing us to use their open-signed online system. This of course meant that ALOT of freeware was unable to be signed…Until now that is, read on to become liberated!

First of all, I’d like to thank MORF of the Symbian Freak forums once again, if it wasn’t for him many thousands of Chinese-illiterate people would still be without certs.

How to get a developer certificate:

Head over to the certificate request thread over at the OPDA forums by clicking here.

Click on the register button at the top of the page.

Fill in the registration form as shown in the image below (Click for full size):

Once you’ve registered, go back to the page we started at and scroll down to the bottom where you should find a text entry field. Fill it in according to the image.

Once you’ve posted the message, make a note of your post number which will be located at the top right of your message.

Check the first post of the thread every few days and see if you’re one of the lucky people who has received their super certificate. If so, click the link for the cert that contains your post number.

Scroll down to the bottom of the first post and then you can finally download the rar file containing your certificate and key file!

Things to note:

  • Posting your IMEI on the internet may be dangerous depending on where you live.
  • It may take several days before you receive your certificate, OPDA do about 1000 people per day.
  • You will need to have posted atleast 5 times to be able to download the rar file.
  • You MUST keep the key file and certificate file safe as they’re directly linked, I recommend emailing them to yourself or keeping them on some flash drives/memory cards.

Enjoy!
